Pacific Poetry Project- Call for Poems

The Pacific Poetry Project

A new anthology collecting work from Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver B. C. poets, published by the exciting Portland State University publishing project, Ooligan Press.

Anticipated release date: April 2013
Seattle regional editors: Kathleen Flenniken, David Horowitz, and Cody Walker.

Kathleen Flenniken invites poets active in the Seattle area to submit up to five poems for consideration.

Submission deadline: June 1, 2011.

1. Poets need not be residents of Seattle, but they should be actively engaged in the Seattle poetry community.

2. Poems may be unpublished or previously published, but the poet must have rights and/or waive any fees for republication.

3. Submissions may be up to five poems. Please mail as a single attachment.

4. Include a 50 – 75 word bio.

5. In the body of your letter, briefly outline your involvement with poetry in Seattle: publication, editorial work, readings (organizing or participating), teaching, or ?

6. Submit work to mail@kathleenflenniken.com.

William O’Daly is a poet, translator, and fiction writer. His translations include eight books of the poetry of Chilean Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, and a chapbook of his own poems, all published by Copper Canyon Press. O’Daly was a finalist for the 2006 Quill Award in Poetry and was profiled on NBC’s The Today Show. A National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, his poems, translations, and essays are published widely in magazines and anthologies. With co-author Han-ping Chin, he recently completed a historical novel, This Earthly Life, which was awarded as a Finalist in Narrative’s 2009 Fall Story Contest.

2011 SHA Ethnographic Poetry Competition

The Society for Humanistic Anthropology announces our
annual poetry
competition as a means to encourage scholars to use alternative
literary genres to
explore anthropological concerns. These concerns may be any of those
associated
with the fields of anthropology: Archaeological, Biological, Linguistic,
Sociocultural and Applied.

Winning entries and honorable mentions will be recognized
at the annual meeting
of the American Anthropological Association in Fall 2011, and will be
published
in the Society's journal, Anthropology and Humanism. The winner(s) will
receive
a certificate and award of $100 and a fre substribition to the jourla.
Those who enter the competition will receive a copy of the winning
issue. All entries will be considered for publication in the journal.

Deadline: All entries must be postmarked by August 1, 2011.

Non-Members Entry Fee: $10.00

Members of the American Anthropological Association do not have to
submit an entry fee. Others must submit a check for $ 10 made out to
the Society for Humanistic Anthropology .

Frost Farm Prize

Trustees of the Robert Frost Farm in Derry, NH, and the Hyla Brook
Poets announced a new prize for metrical poetry: The Frost Farm Prize.
The winner of the inaugural contest, judged by award-winning writer
and editor William Baer, will walk away with $1,000 and an invitation,
with honorarium, to read as part of The Hyla Brook Reading Series at
the Robert Frost Farm in Derry in the summer of 2011.

Poetry Workshop - Tacoma MARCH 26

Seattle poet Jeremy Halinen will offer a poetry workshop Saturday, March 26th, from 2 to 5 PM in the Olympic Room of the downtown branch of the Tacoma Public Library. This workshop is free and open to the public, but space is limited to the first twelve registrants.

Editor of Knockout Literary Magazine and a graduate of Eastern Washington University’s MFA program, Halinen has published poems in the Los Angeles Review, Poet Lore, and Best Gay Poetry 2008. His first full-length book, What Other Choice, was the winner of Exquisite Disarray Publishing’s 2010 First Book Poetry Contest, selected by guest judge Kathleen Flenniken.

With the book publishing business fragmented and entering a re-organization phase, this is the time to take advantage of the many ways to publish -- some that will pay you, some that you pay for (with deals running from very little to investment types).

You'll receive publishing tips from a published author (me), along with weekly exercises to play with the writing process. You'll get pointers on writing effective query letters and proposals, along with hints at finding an agent and/or publisher. Registration is only $50 for the entire eight weeks. We meet from 2 to 4 p.m. each Tuesday.

Calling all writers: On Wednesday, October 20th, Columbia will launch
its 2011 contest in fiction, nonfiction and poetry!

We’re awarding up to $1,500 in prizes, plus publication in our
forthcoming print journal. The top works in fiction will be judged by
Robert Olen Butler (1993 Pulitzer Prize winner, A Good Scent from a
Strange Mountain), Jo Ann Beard in nonfiction (The Boys of My Youth),
and Joanna Klink (Raptus) for poetry.

Judges will select a first-place winner from among the ten finalists in
each genre. The finalists are chosen by Columbia Journal staff.

First-place winners in each genre will receive a $500 prize, and their
work will be published in Issue 49 of the journal (Spring 2011).
Winners and runners-up may be considered for publication on the
journal’s website.

The deadline for entry is January 18, 2011. The entry fee is $12.

Contest submissions in fiction and nonfiction must be no longer than
twenty double-spaced pages. Poets may send up to five individual poems
for consideration, but they must be combined into a single document.

Please note: judges have discretion in selecting winners and may choose
not to award a first-place prize. Judges also may request edits of
winning works. The contest is not open to current Columbia University
students or those who have graduated within the last five years

Poetry Jumps Off the Shelf partners with Verse Wisconsin to conduct the Jawbreaker Poetry Project. "Luck of the Draw" is the theme, and poems are sought that touch, in some way, on good fortune, misfortune, opportunities gone awry, flukes, coincidence or second chances.

Selected poems will be packed into jawbreaker capsules with candy, gum or toys, and available - along with the possibility of winning a year's subscription to Verse Wisconsin - from a dispenser coined the Verse-O-Matic. This dispenser will be transported to various Wisconsin venues statewide in April during National Poetry Month, then travel with the Verse Wisconsin editors to events, conferences and festivals nationwide throughout 2011. The poems will also be published in the summer 2011 online issue of Verse Wisconsin.

Class Outline:
This 2-hour workshop will be led by Poet Laureate of Tacoma, Tammy Robacker, and is designed to explore Ekphrastic Poetry for poets and writers of all skill levels. Workshop attendees will spend time examining and discussing existing, canonized Ekphrastic poems by poets who confront paintings by artists such as Picasso, Pollock, Van Gogh, Duchamp and others. Then students will be given the opportunity to write their own Ekphrastic poetry in exercises that respond to samples of paintings/artwork provided at the workshop. Last of all, students will share their written work aloud in a round-robin fashion for gentle critique and commentary by the group.

The all-new Tuesday Afternoon Writing Salon begins on September 28, in the newly expanded Conference Room at the Mandolin Café (3923 S. 12th, Tacoma). We’ll meet from 2 to 4 p.m. on eight Tuesdays (ending November 16).

I’m limiting participants to a dozen, and some already have signed up. If you’re planning to join in, let me know as soon as possible. Cost remains at $50 for 8 sessions, or $8 per individual session.

The format will also remain similar, although the contents change as the book publishing business changes. We’ll use four weeks to shine up manuscripts (or provide tips for those just starting a project), and the second four weeks to review the many ways to publish your book. Once you had only a couple of options; now there are at least eight – and we’ll find the best one for you.

In addition to the hunger many people have to publish their collection of poems, or write their first novel, they simply do not know where to start once the manuscript takes shape. It is daunting for writers and poets to consider the overwhelming world of publication options. Can you self-publish? Should you get an agent? What is the benefit of working with small presses?

I asked my pals David Lasky (cartoonist and former bakery employee), Jennifer Borges Foster (the poet and book artist who designed the cover of ACBOP), Brian McGuigan (champion eater/writer), and Lauren Fink (essayist and fancy dessert maker) to write new work inspired by pie. PONGO poetry program: Call for Volunteers!

This email begins with Pongo's annual Call for Volunteers. Please forward this email to agencies and colleagues. The Pongo opportunity will train you to help victims of trauma (abuse, violent loss, etc.) to heal through poetry writing. The skills will benefit you in current and future careers in counseling and teaching. Pongo poetry writing is uniquely helpful for distressed individuals, and uniquely nurturing for caregivers. Participation in Pongo requires your serious commitment to be on a Pongo team in a site such as juvenilte detention, where you will work one weekday afternoon per week from mid-Sept to mid-April. (Currently, the state psychiatric hospital site meets on Mondays in Tacoma, and the juvenile detention site meets on Tuesdays in Seattle.)

To begin the process for selection as a Pongo volunteer, please email your resume and a writing sample (preferably poetry) to richard@pongoteenwriting.org . A Whidbey Island resident, Healy has been the winner of several other national awards, including the Hackney Prize, she has been published extensively both in the U.S. and her native Argentina. Last year, Healy became the first person to become a legal resident of this country on the sole basis of her poetry.
